Soul~Body~Yoga™ is an integration of Hatha Yoga, Body Mind Centering™, Pilates, experiential anatomy, freestyle play, massage & intuitive studies. The flow is Yin~like, often involves blankets & sand bags to feel a sense of compression & to help open joints. Students are also invited to freely move within many of the pose sequences to ignite their creative muscles.
The effect is deep nourishment & nervous system restoration, muscle strengthening & release. My approach is light~hearted & healing. A massage effect is often produced.
Private sessions last one hour, cost $108 & are customized according to my client’s primary focus & physical, mental, emotional & energetic requirements. I took my first yoga classes in 1972 in Austin, Texas and have taken classes pretty steadily since then – some 45 years. Over the years I have experienced some teachers that did not suit me, several very good teachers, and a few remarkable teachers. Mary Bevington is in the remarkable category. Classes with these remarkable teachers share some characteristics. The classes:
- are extremely well-organized and well-timed. They always leave me feeling better physically than when I arrived because the postures are well balanced, especially between forward bending and backward bending.
- have a meditative atmosphere that emphasizes the spiritual side of yoga through the postures, though not with an emphasis on a specific doctrine. Generally these teachers have what I will call good background patter that helps establish the meditative atmosphere and keep the students present in the room, the posture, and the moment. Mary sometimes uses music as well. When she does, I have found her selections support the meditative atmosphere.
- demonstrate an ability on the part of the teacher to tune in to the students on two levels. First they are able to adapt postures and suggest alternate postures to address each student’s personal situation in a healing way. And second they seem to be able to read the atmosphere of the class as a whole, perhaps even changing their plans on the spot in order to bring students to a more peaceful mental place than when they arrived.
- leave students feeling valued for having taken the time to go inside, to be present in their bodies at that moment, regardless of their yoga abilities.
are always different and interesting.
Mary’s classes have all of the above characteristics, and more. She brings a glow and joy to every class that is uplifting. Her voice is soothing to listen to as she talks from an enormous wealth of knowledge about the benefits of a given posture and the various parts and systems of the body that it is addressing, yin and yang, the solar system, books she has read, … Her connections are wide-ranging and her conversational style is never intrusive. It keeps me present, curious, and learning from the posture. Her knowledge of yoga and other types of bodywork is profound, and she is creative and intuitive, so that her ability to create and tailor postures that flow seamlessly, and that target a specific issue or goal is uncanny. She listens deeply on many levels, and is generous with her time and knowledge. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
Mary has been a tremendous help with establishing my yoga business in the SF Bay Area. I recommend her guidance highly for any one looking to establish a business whether yoga or otherwise as she is a gifted guide for the nuances required”.
You are irreplaceable! Miss my 2 Yin Yoga ‘retreats’ twice a week.
I have sought Mary’s help many times with my own yoga practice, and she has helped me adapt my practice to various changes in my life and body, and to recover from hip and hamstring injuries that I’ve incurred over the years. Mary has additional training in Pilates and massage therapy, and she uses her deep understanding of anatomy and posture to guide students and clients to a strong, safe and inspired practice. Mary is generous, smart, compassionate, and dependable; she is a natural teacher; relates well to everybody she meets; and she knows her stuff.
In Mary’s Yin Yoga classes I have been consistently impressed and humbled by her teachings and wisdom. Each class incorporates a physical, mental and spiritual practice but with each breath and movement Mary takes the group beyond their baseline into a space of intention, healing and self~realization. Mary has an ability to hold space, be present and create an atmosphere for personal development and growth. Rarely have I met an individual who has been so truly in alignment with her life’s work…Her presence and self awareness are sincere and evident, as is her love and value of teaching…I hold an incredible amount of faith and trust for Mary’s work now and in the future.
Your classes are really special. I melt into the floor and just fall away. Such a gift.
It was such a magical treat to be guided and nurtured and attended by you in what naturally then became a beautifully woven tapestry of awarenesses; self-awareness, community awareness, and body neurology awareness all in one incredible afternoon that allowed all participants to emerge as the extraordinary beings that they are!
Mary is one of the best yoga teachers and Intuitive Counselors I have ever come across in my 30 years of spiritual practice. She has wisdom from within herself as well as extensive experience studying with masters. Mary teaches and leads from her heart, and I am honored to have studied with her, as well as benefited from her guidance through difficult times.
I really loved our session the other day. You provided so many nuggets of gold and confirmations for me. Thank you SO much. ❤️
I can still remember my first Yin yoga class with Mary, over five years ago on a late December afternoon. I had never tried Yin yoga, and after her class I was hooked. I loved the stillness and deep release that Mary’s careful guidance provided. Since that time, I’ve taken more yoga classes with Mary than I can count – Yin, Slow Flow, Astanga based Vinyasa and even a few Pilates classes. I’ve learned something new in each of her classes and really appreciate her deep knowledge of the theory and practice of Yoga and of the human body and mind. Mary has a very positive outlook and is enthusiastic to share her knowledge. She makes her classes accessible to all of her students regardless of their ability or experience. It has been a real pleasure to me to practice with and get to know Mary over the years, and I think you will enjoy her classes and teaching as much as I have.
You are the BEST teacher! I’ve learned so much from you!
When thinking of time spent with Mary in her playshops and intuitive readings, one word comes to mind, and that is “joy.” Mary holds a loving and joyful space, and I felt that whatever came up for me during the time would be met with an awareness and kindness that could ultimately help me to heal and integrate. Her playshops and readings helped me connect head and heart, in order to process some emotionally difficult life experiences related to loss and grief. Mary’s gentle observations and re-frames gave me tools that I still use. I would eagerly attend any playshops in the future, and recommend her highly as an intuitive reader for anyone looking for deeper clarity in areas of relationships, well-being, and soul calling. Mary is deeply gifted in her arts, and her insight has made a remarkable difference in my life. Thank you Mary for the great wisdom you share!
